Word of the Day #3: クリスマスケーキ Christmas Cake

in Japanese Word of the Day, Word of the Day

Today, I learned an interesting Japanese slang from YouTube (1:11min).

Christmas cakes are like single women.

After the 25th, Christmas cakes are no longer wanted, so they become cheaper.

Similarly, women after they are 25, their chances of getting married become slimmer.

どっちもちょっとひどいなんだけど、日本語の「クリスマスケーキ」は、中国語の「剩女 」より優しそうだと思います。
They’re both pretty mean but the Japanese “Christmas Cake” sounds gentler than the Chinese “Leftover Women”.

However, now, the marriageable age has gone up, so “Christmas Cake” seems to be rarely used.
